Are any of these good mangas/animes for a casual anime fan to watch/read?

Hi guys.

So, recently I've been interested in giving these things a try:

shiboritoranaide onna shounin-san

Overlord

Outbreak company

Those Who Hunt Elves

Slayers

First Squad: The Moment of Truth

Blood Blockade Battlefront

Made in Abyss

I'm a fan of the more interesting and/or sillier varieties of mangos and animus, so do you think any of these would be worth the effort of me hunting down a translated version of?

Can't say about the rest, but Shiboritoranaide Onna Shounin-san is borderline porn.

As in, slimy-slimy tentacles-on-girls(and boys), the-only-thing-missing-from-this-sex(?)-scene-is-the-actual-genitals porn.

I don't know what "casual anime fan" means but if that sounds like too much for you then uhhh now you know.

I feel I may have been misled slightly:

Is it kinda like Monster Musume, where the characters get close to banging, but never do?

If it is, I don't really mind that as long as it's funny.

I've read through the entirety of Monster Musume and I keep forgetting how often the characters flash their tits because I found the general story to be quite entertaining and the characters were very likeable.

If the entire core of the thing is "hurr hurr…boobs" then I probably won't like it, as it'll just be like an ordinary day on KYM.

Oh, and by casual anime fan, I mean that I know of the big names like Jo Jo, One Piece, Berserk and other things like that; but I've never actually sat down and watched/read them.

I have only read two mangas in full (Konosuba and Monster Musume) and I've only watched the following animes from start to finish:

Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos

Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Z

GATE: The JSDF fought there

The Saga of Tanya the Evil

I don't know if they count, but I've also seen the entire original series of Pokémon, Digimon and Avatar the Last Air Bender as well.

So in essence, I am a newb scrublord when it comes to these things.

Haven't read anything off the list, but from what I heard Made in Abyss manga can get really extreme, so I wouldn't call it a casual read.

I was given the general idea that Made in Abyss is about a bunch of chibis that dug too greedily and too deeply and accidently unleashed eldritch abominations upon themselves.

On the scale of Spec Ops: The Line too Metamorphosis, how fucked up are we talking here?

I'll probably give it a skip if it's on the ultra-depressing/guro side of the scale.

A trainwreck can be morbidly interesting in small snippets; but it's not the thing I want look at for hours on end.

You owe it to yourself to watch Girls Und Panzer and pay tribute to the Goddess of /k/.

Some additional recommendations based on your interests:

  • Nihonkoku Shoukan is a manga like GATE but instead of a portal between Japan and fantasy world Japan itself is transported to fantasy world. More geopolitical focus but there's some heavy military focus, including war crimes!

  • If you like Overlord you may like So I'm a Spider, So What (protag voiced by Tanya's VA) or That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime. They're similar "becoming the demon lord" isekais.

  • If you like Konosuba you may like Combatants Will Be Dispatched, it's the author's previous manga that got recently turned into an anime.

  • You MIGHT like Monster Girl Interviews. It's a less horny more slice-of-life monstergirl anime. Alternatively go Interspecies Reviewers if you want MORE HORNY. Alternatively Alternatively go Seton Academy: Join the Pack if you want something as comedic.

Some additional hail mary recommendations since I think our tastes sound fairly similar:

  • Full Metal Alchemist is one of those "classics" you are obliged to watch. I personally prefer the original but I am in the minority. Watch Brotherhood if you're only gonna watch it once, otherwise watch the original then Brotherhood.

  • I get a vibe that you'll love Golden Kamuy. It's set in early 1900s Hokkaido and it's about a bunch of soldiers and other criminals trying to complete a map to a huge gold treasure that's hidden in the tattoos of a bunch of escaped inmates. Gets more and more interesting each season.

  • You may also like Log Horizon and the Fate series but they're a bit… heady. It's not recommended if you're just doing some casual watching as there's a lot going on that's sometimes hard to track. Would recommend these with a weeb co-pilot.

  • Do a blind watch of School-Live! if you can (it just got removed from Crunchyroll…) and trust me it's pretty good.

  • Give Gurren Lagann a try if you haven't already. After that give Kill La Kill a spin. This is the cliff point to deep weebdom for many so be warned.

Oh and last note: as someone who recently started Berserk it's easily one of the best manga ever made but it is BIG and DARK. Don't bite off more than you can chew with that.

Of that list, the only one I've seen was Outbreak Company. It being essentially a more cutesy, slice-of-life take of GATE. Not a terribly memorable series, but I do remember the elf maid girl was adorable.

Something else as I've taken notice that you have a keen interest in military-history, I would recommend The Cockpit ova. It's only 3 episodes, each a self contained story, which can be easily watched in one sitting. It's one of the few animes that plays WW2 in entirely straight demeanor, without any of usually eccentricities one has come to expect

Well, the characters definitely get close to banging but never do, but some scenes can get very risque regardless. I remember a scene that can pass as/is straight out of/is literally just tentacle hentai, with the only thing missing being…well, penetration.

It is pretty funny though.

Disclaimer: I've never watched nor read Monster Musume so I don't really have a point of reference.

Only seen Blood blockade battlefront and overlord out of that list.

blood blockade battlefront is on the more serious side of things. It's not 40k GRIMDARK or anything, but yeah. It's good though. Has a lot of action.

Overlord is more balanced. It's a bit more silly & slice of life-ish at times, but has a somewhat serious plot. Overlord is probably closest to GATE in this regard. Not that I've actually watched GATE mind you, just going off youtube clips I've seen of it. Personally, I went in with low expectations of Overlord and came out pleasantly surprised.

So yeah, both are worth watching. It's been a while since I've seen these, so if anyone sees I'm wrong on any of this, feel free to point it out.

Oh no no. Made in Abyss is about people finding an already dug cursed hole and now 2 children want to get to the very bottom of it, but hole gets more and more hostile as they travel. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty much Berserk of recent times, with both downsides and upsides. Basically if you don't want to see a child get badly hurt, avoid.

Let's see

shiboritoranaide onna shounin-san: only gave that one a glance, and yeah… while it never shows any of the naught bits, it really has some high levels of fanservice comparable to monmusume

Overlord: has its moment but sometimes reads like a power fantasy, pretty comparable to the Tanya the Evil series. Overall pretty decent

Made in Abyss: Really fucked up, not recommended for the faint of heart, we are talking about characters taking not only physical but also emotional pain.

The rest i am not really familliar with

If i were you, i'd also watch Isekai Quartet: A crossover between Overlord, Konosuba, Youjo Senki and Re: Zero. Entire series is a spoof of their own shows.

Heterogeneous Linguistics
If you want more worldbuilding in your story. Be wary as it does get more verbose in the later chapters.

The Unpopular Mangaka And The Helpful Onryo-san
A slice of life similar to The Helpful Fox Senko-san but the lolibaba kitsune is swapped with a mute ghost girl that is more comedic than wholesome.

Sousou no Frieren
A slow burn adventure that takes place many years after the Demon King's defeat. Focuses on an elf mage who is at odds with her immortality, and seeks a way to find peace of mind with the hero's soul. Her new party also put up with her aloofness like bewildered parents.

The Executed Sage Is Reincarnated as a Lich and Starts an All-Out War
Another fantasy. But the Hero and Sage are betrayed by the very kingdom they swore to protect. Sage literally becomes too angry to die and turns into a powerful lich. What keeps him sane is the Hero's remains, whose soul still remains at peace despite the Sage's dark aura that surrounds her bones.

If I Get Serious, I Can Kill You
Another user has described it better that I could:
Girl stuck in an arranged marriage, picks up weightlifting to stay sane and becomes a secret tomboy. To-be husband is totally into that, and that throws her off-guard because she doesn't actually know how to date anyone sincerely

Gal no Haigo ni Rei ga Iru
Supernatural Slice-of-Life involving two schoolgirls and their ghost friend. Very cute and very silly.

Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita
Two absent-minded scientists use science to prove who loves the other the most. Their colleagues are often forced to partake in their experiments.

Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta
Middle-school romance where the main guy does whatever he can to protect the main girl from embarrassing herself whenever she forgets her glasses. The fluff in this series will rot your teeth.

Itai Onee-san wa Suki Desu ka?
Kefka comedy involving a mid-20s office lady with zero confidence in herself. This one really hurts on a spiritual level due to how relatable the MC is. But the gags evens out the depressing tone.

Isekai Uncle
Uncle wakes up from his coma. Turns out he was isekai'd to a fantasy world where everyone mistaken him for an ogre. He comes back to his home world and uses the magic he learned to start a YouTube channel. Series relies on a lot of flashbacks to make expositions.

Ponkotsu-chan Kenshouchuu
A meteorite is about to destroy the earth within one year. So God bestows a high school girl a plethora of superpowers to find out which ability will be useful in stopping the inevitable. Heavy on fanservice but the scenes with the main guy and girl are adorable.

Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha
Solo adventurer dies and turns into a sentient skelly boi. He fight his way up the undead tiers to become a ghoul and leaves the dungeon. But because he was gone for so long the guild has marked him KIA. So he creates a new identity and starts from scratch again.

High School Inari Tamamo-chan!
High school setting where a kitsune disguises herself as a student. While she can fool the faculty, the student body sees through her disguise. But they roll along with it because the kitsune is cute and is mostly harmless.

Amano Megumi wa Suki Darake!
THICC as holy childhood friend constantly tries any means to get the bookish main guy's attention. But her clothing keeps betraying her whenever she looks the other way, which distracts the main guy immensely. Fanservice ranges from reasonable to gravity-defying scenarios.

Houkago Assault Girls
All-girl highschool class get isekai'd to an alternate WWII setting by a cat girl to fight Nazi zombies. It could have been good, but the health meter is the girl's uniforms. More damage means more clothing ripped which means unnecessary fanservice. Which is a shame because I do like the uniform designs.

Ojiichan Shinanai
A finished series about a chad old man flirting with an angel who has come to take him to heaven.

Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!
Reverse isekai where the main guy takes his elf partner out to see Japan's landmarks and foods. They return to the fantasy world by sleeping together in the same bed.

Isekai wo Seigyo Mahou de Kirihirake!
Typical adventure story where an exiled noble and his beastkin maid go and explore beyond their estate. It's fast read as it was axed for reasons that can be found through Google.

Hiraheishi wa Kako wo Yumemiru
Fantasy setting where the main guy dies near the end of the final battle. But is sent back in time to when he was born and with his entire memory intact. He plans on using this knowledge to try and save his friends from dying again.

Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi
Salaryman gets isekai'd by mistake. But decides to make the best out of it and becomes a merchant in this new world. But his cooking attracts one of the most powerful beings in the realm, which results in him making a contract with the monstrous wolf Fenrir.

Neeko wa Tsurai yo
MC gets ridiculed so hard during an interview that she reverts into a NEET. Parents and sister do the best they can to get her back on her feet and find a job. Though I feel the mother may be a bit more harsher on her, though.

Kumika no Mikaku
Kumika is best girl. I will cut anyone who disagrees.

Have I got a solution for you

On that note, read Needless. It tells the story of a raging lolicon traveling across a bombed-out wasteland in the middle of Japan in search of lolis to add to his harem.*

*It does not

Dad, the Beard Gorilla, and I

A finished slice-of-life series about a rambunctious daughter, her timid but well-meaning father, and her gorilla/uncle hybrid (to her eyes at least). The brother comes to live with them after the recent death of her mom. He is mostly there to provide culinary stability as the Dad cannot cook to save his life. Really silly but it does hit some heavy themes in later chapters.
