I decided to jump on the VPN bandwagon not long ago and see how it rides, and it had had no effect on this site until today. What must be as recently as this hour, the IP address I was using got banned. Turning off my VPN service seems to fix the problem, but I have to wonder, what makes for an IP ban like that?
