There Is No Queen of England

About

"There Is No Queen of England" is a memorable quote said by the 2010 animated film Megamind character Hal Stewart. Online, still images of Stewart paired with the humorously changed quote have been used as a two-panel meme format, often in reference to misconceptions.

Origin

On November 5th, 2010, the animated film Megamind premiered in the United States.^[1] In one scene of the film, the character Hal Stewart (aka Titan / Tighten) speaks to Roxanne Richie, telling her that she is delusional and "there is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth Fairy and there is no Queen of England."

There is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth Fairy and there is no Queen of England. This is the real world, and you need to wake up.

Spread

On February 1st, 2017, the Facebook group Moviefone posted a two-panel image based on the scene captioned with the quote,^[2] with the post gaining over 5,400 likes in three years (shown below).

On August 11th, 2018, Redditor KingNormie posted the earliest known meme based on the format to /r/dankmemes subreddit (shown below, left), with the post gaining over 5,900 upvotes.^[3] In the following days, more memes based on the two-panel image were posted on Reddit, primarily in /r/dankmemes (shown below, center and right).

Before August 2019, the format saw limited use online on Reddit, Twitter and other platforms. On August 9th, 2019, Redditor m5k posted a meme that gained over 38,000 upvotes in five days (shown below, top left),^[4] prompting a surge in the popularity of the format.

Queen Elizabeth's II Death

Following Queen Elizabeth II's death on September 8th, 2022, the image, often without a caption, was widely circulated on social media (example shown below).^[5]
