About

World Series Masterpass Ad refers to a CGI advertisement which was displayed onscreen during Game 2 of the 2017 World Series between the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers. A glitch caused the advertisement to obscure an Astros player's head as he made a catch, leading to jokes about the moment on Twitter.

Origin

On October 25th, 2017, in the sixth inning of Game 2 of the 2017 World Series, a glitch in a CGI ad for Masterpass caused the head of Houston Astros player George Springer to be obscured as he made a catch in the outfield[1] (shown below).

Spread

Immediately after the moment aired, Twitter users began joking about it. The jokes appeared one of two ways. One way found Twitter users photoshopping the ad to show various different messages. For example, Twitter user @atf13atf[2] uploaded an edit which references the fact the Washington Nationals have never won a playoff series, gaining over 250 retweets (shown below, left). Twitter user @lindseyadler[3] uploaded an edit that made the ad simply read "ass" (shown below, right).

Other Twitter users joked about the moment by adding captions to the original image (examples shown below). The jokes were covered by SBNation,[1] Yahoo Sports,[6] NY Daily News,[7] AOL Finance,[8] Awful Announcing,[4] and Twitter Moments.[5]
